Kitaya / Kitaya (FUKUOKA)
Founded in 1820 during the late Edo period, in Yame—a land of natural beauty located in a corner of the Chikushi Plain—this sake brewery has now reached its 200th anniversary. The current company and product name, “Kitaya,” was originally chosen as the brewery name at the time of its founding, based on a strong aspiration to bring joy to many people through sake. In the 2013 International Wine Challenge (IWC), it was awarded the title of “Champion Sake,” the highest honor among 583 entries in the sake division. IWC director Sam Harrop praised it as an exotic and modern sake yet possessing a magnificent richness and clarity. It impressed even Master of Wine holders, the world’s most prestigious wine qualification.
